Prefabricados Pujol builds 4 km tunnel

This September, Prefabricados Pujol, headquartered in Lleida, Spain, has initiated construction work on the tunnel segments for the 4 km long tunnel for AVE (Spain’s high-speed train), which will be built in Montcada i Reixach, a town in the province of Barcelona. The concrete structure, which will be used to form the arch of the tunnel, will consist of eight pieces. Six of these will have a weight of 11,000 kg, “which means it will become one of the largest concrete structures in Spain,” as the general manager of Prefabricados Pujol, Antoni Sarradell, assured the newspaper La Mañana. Sarradell indicated that the company’s progress along a path of continued diversification—which the Mollerussa company has followed since its beginnings— has accelerated in recent times due to the crisis in the construction sector.

To carry out the job of building the segments that will be used as the basis for the tunnel arches—which will be erected by Adif (Spain’s state railway administration agency)—Prefabricados Pujol will expand its factory in Les Borges Blanques by 10,000 sq m. The company devotes this facility, in the capital of Les Garrigues, to cement manufacturing and the creation of precast structures, such as the tunnel segments for the AVE tunnel or the installation of technological concrete solutions for the future Line 9 of the Barcelona Metro.

Sarradell commented that Adif had contracted a total of 4 km of tunnel for the AVE structure with Pujol, and it is anticipated that the works will be completed within a period of two years. With the help of this initiative, Prefabricados Pujol expects to consolidate its industrial projects at the Les Borges Blanques plant.

At the same time, the company’s general manager explained that the works would serve to “stabilize the workforce” at a time when construction is experiencing difficult times. Right now, Prefabricados Pujol expects that the project will employ 100 to 120 workers while the infrastructure is being manufactured. Close to a million Euros have been invested, although Sarradell emphasized that the expenditures are being made in instalments, with the goal of allowing the Borges headquarters to serve as a foundation for developing technological solutions using precast products.

The 10,000 sq m expansion of the Borges headquarters follows a 4,000 sq m addition completed last December to handle manufacturing for the Barcelona Metro’s Line 9.

At the moment, the manufacture of concrete solutions for suburban Barcelona is at a standstill, “simply because our work there has dried up.” We are waiting for Adif to finish off the structures that we built, Sarradell noted.

At the beginning of this year, Prefabricados Pujol installed the high-tensile concrete shuttering slabs along a 4-km segment of Line 9 for the Barcelona Metro. The company got into the cement business with a land-buying transaction in Les Borges Blanques, as a means to ensure its growth. With the goal of preventing a shortage of industrial zoned land from hindering any of its projects, the company—led by Josep Maria Pujol—purchased 100,000 sq m of land in the Castellots industrial park, located 15 km from Mollerussa, the central headquarters of the family-owned business group.

Advantages of the precast construction system

As the general manager of Prefabricados Pujol explained, the precast construction system “offers advantages in terms of quality, shortens the delivery timeline for projects, and saves money.”

In this vein, he recalled initiatives carried out by the Mollerussa-based company, such as part of the roof for the Adif track lanes in the city of Lleida, or the construction of the Norman Foster wine cellar in the Ribera del Duero wine country, in the province of Burgos.
